SFA names defensive coordinator Jeff Byrd interim head coach

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (SFA Athletics) - Stephen F. Austin has named Jeff Byrd as interim head football coach.

The announcement comes after head coach Clint Conque was suspended Monday pending an investigation into alleged violations of university policy. The investigation is expected to take several weeks and no comments will be made by the university until the investigation is complete.

A coaching veteran known for aggressive defensive play, Byrd has spent the last 15 seasons in the defensive coordinator role. Byrd came to Nacogdoches after serving as the University of Tennessee at Martin's defensive coordinator for five seasons.

Byrd spoke to the media Wednesday afternoon.
