Lyons, Jolly shine as TVCC prepares for NJCAA Tournament

ATHENS, Texas (KETK) -- Entering the Region 14 Tournament, the TVCC Cardinals knew they needed to win the whole thing if they wanted to keep their season alive, and after an 87-67 victory over Navarro, they were holding up their 5th conference title.

"You know they definitely went through a tough regional tournament as a 4th seed to get all the way to Hutch, it's been a fantastic finish," said head coach Guy Furr.

Tyson Jolly was named Tournament MVP, and averaged 22.5 points this season.

But the Oklahoma native's collegiate career didn't start at TVCC, instead he signed with Baylor, before deciding to make his way to the Cardinals in East Texas.

"He wasn't happy with the way his career went from there, but you know, since he's been here things are picking up now, he's one of the most highly recruited kids the country," said Furr.

"Everything I knew about it was man they are going to come let you hoop, if you can hoop they are going to let you do it, so when I came, it's exactly what it was, they let me figure it out," said Jolly.

As for Gary Lyons, he didn't have to travel far to make it to campus, since he graduated from Athens High School.

But the former Hornet had to earn a spot as a walk-on, and has become an integral part to this team's journey to Hutch.

"When the first day came, I was the hardest worker, first one in the gym last one to leave, and it paid off," said Lyons.

"What he has done at the college level has certainly, you know, been amazing and the best thing about Gary, he's a freshman, we get to have him again next year," said Furr.

As for this year, there is more to be done.

The Cardinals tip off against Shelton State, at 2 p.m. on Monday, in Hutchinson, Kansas.
