GLADEWATER, Texas (KETK) - The Gladewater Bears are district champions for the first time since 2014.
Gladewater trailed 28-7 midway through the second quarter. But made an incredible comeback, tying the game at 28 in the third, and holding Tatum scoreless until overtime.
But after the Eagles took the lead in the extra session, the Bears went to their money man. Sophomore Eli Carter scored from eight yards out to bring Gladewater within point.
They gave it right back to him, and the leading rusher in East Texas bulled his way in for a two-point conversion that gave John Berry's Bears the 8-3A Division I Crown and also a thrilling 36-35 triumph over Tatum.
Carter finished with 164 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns. The victory snaps Tatum's six-game winning streak, and gives the Bears the top-seed ouf of the district into the Class 3A Division I Playoffs.
Gladewater finishes the regular season at 9-1 overall, and 5-1 in district play. Tatum falls to 6-3 overall, and also 5-1 in league action.
Gladewater will take on Hughes Springs in the Bi-District round of the playoffs. According to Hughes Springs ISD, the contest is tentatively set to be played next Friday Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Hallsville's Bobcat Stadium.
Tatum, as the No. 2 seed will face Mount Vernon. Time, Date, and location are to be determined.
