The time has come for East Texans to head to the polls and make their voices heard in the November 6 general elections.
The race for U.S. House District 1 features two candidates: incumbent Louie Gohmert (R) and Shirley McKellar (D).
District 1 covers Smith, Gregg, Harrison, Rusk, Panola, Shelby, Nacogdoches, San Augustine, Sabine, and Angelina County.
Gohmert has held the seat since 2005, and one he says is important.
“Who controls Congress will decide whether we are going to just have a wide open border, whether we’re going to move toward socialism has been a driving force behind the Democrats. They’re coming out stronger and stronger.”
McKellar is facing Mr. Gohmert for the fourth time.
“I’m medical, I’m military, I’m entrepreneur, I’m also education. One of the primary issues that bothers me is the fact that there are so many people in East Texas that don’t have healthcare.”
Both candidates are native East Texans, and support Homeland Security, but that’s where their similarities end.
The biggest point of contention: healthcare. McKellar believes everyone should have access to healthcare, where as Gohmert has fought against the Affordable Care Act.
East Texans will just have to decide for themselves who they want to control U.S. House District 1.
