Every year a Memorial Day ceremony is held in Nacogdoches to honor those killed in combat. This year, however, the focus was on the women who have served and lost their lives during the wars throughout American history.
This morning at the Nacogdoches memorial hospital people came to hear the words of our veterans and to pay respect for those who gave it all for our country.
One of the noted speaker was 1st Lieutenant Elaine Cameron, an army nurse who served in Vietnam and was awarded the bronze star.
“As I look at women in the service back to the Spanish American War and what they achieved and what they were asked to do and the hardships. Frankly I am in awe of those women who went before me and after me and what they experienced and what they suffered as volunteers for this country,” said Elaine Cameron a Vietnam Veteran.
Cameron also tells KETK although women tend to not have much recognition in war due to their numbers being so small. Their contributions were huge.
