Tyler, TX (KETK) There will be a veterans benefit fair at The Armed Forces Reserve Center Saturday. It is a free event for veterans and people currently serving the country.
“A very big need,” said veteran, Gary Johnson. “Especially with what has been going on in the last several years. War in Afghanistan. War in Iraq.”
The event will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Texas Veterans Land Board will provide information on state programs.
“Concerning their benefit claims, possible education employment benefits, as well as health coverage,” said Donna Huffman, an on-site representative.
There will also be information about low interest land and home improvement loan benefits.
“Some of them aren’t really aware what all there is out there for them,” said Johnson. “I wasn’t at first when I got out. As time went on I became more aware. It was able to help me through school. It was able to help me get a house, land.”
Representatives from “The Watkins Logan State Veterans Home” will be at the fair.
“What we offer our veterans is 10 houses with 10 veterans living in each house,” said Huffman. “Every veteran has a private room. They have a beautiful living room, a beautiful dining room and home cooked meals.”
“They need to be aware of them, so they can utilize them because they deserve them for serving our country,” said Johnson.
He said, if anything, the event is a great place to meet fellow people who served our country.
“To meet other vets,” said Johnson. “Networking like that can all help them with their future plans in getting any kind of access to any future benefits to their health and wellbeing.”
The Armed Forces Reserve Center is located at 13592 State Highway 31 West, Tyler, Texas.
