Jury duty in Smith County is about to enter the 21st century.
On Tuesday, Smith County Commissioners approved funding for new technology intended to makefulfilling their civic duty easier for potential jurors.
With this new system, jurors can log into an online portal to fill out personal information before their jury date. Users will be able to change their address and take exemptions.
Attorneys will also have access to more information about jurors before the court date.
District Clerk Penny Clarkston says this change is much needed.
“One of the things I did was to stand outside where the jury parking lot is, and I saw what the jurors had to go through. I talked to them and that was one of the things. Then they come (into the juror room) and they sit, they don’t know what is going on, they are waiting and waiting. So that was my biggest project, my biggest goal, to implement a new jury selection system, and just get everything up to date.”
Also under the new system, if jury duty is canceled or changed, jurors can be notified by text.
The new program is scheduled to launch in September.
