Smith County courts using cell phones to modernize jury duty system

Top Stories

The Smith County courts are introducing a new information system using cellphones to modernize their current jury duty process.

With this new system, jurors will be able to receive mass notifications directly on their phone about upcoming service instead of having to turn to an online posting or notification in the mail.

The Smith County jury coordinator said some of the things residents can accomplish through their phones include updating all of their information, claiming an exemption or asking to reschedule.

Now with the new system, the same rules of the court still apply, and jurors will have to show up on their assigned day.

However, if there are any changes to your scheduled time or other adjustments, a mass text can be sent to everyone in the group.

The jury coordinator says this is a step in the right direction to keep the system up to date with technology and should give jurors easier access to their information.

The new program won’t be officially available to use until September, but court members are notifying jurors now so they can get acclimated to this system over summer.
