Smith County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that happened early Friday morning in Tyler. Deputies were called to the 11100 block of Spur 248 near University Blvd and Old Omen road a little after midnight.

When deputies arrived at the home they found two people in the living room, one of which had a gunshot wound to the chest.

The victim was taken to UT Health with non-life threatening injuries.

Deputies said Jordan Lavar Roberson, 32, of Tyler told them that he was taking the pistol apart to clean it when it accidentally fired a round. When deputies asked the victim what had happened she told investigators the same thing.

Smith County Sheriff’s Investigators believe the evidence collected is consistent with an accidental shooting.

There were five children inside the house at the time which is why CPS was called out to investigate.

Roberson was taken into custody and booked into the Smith County Jail for Felon in Possession of a Firearm as well as warrants for Parole Violation and Possession of Marijuana.

No bond has been set on the firearm charge at this time.
