New class teaches East Texans how to protest property taxes and save money

Grassroots America: We the People is holding an event tonight to teach East Texans how to protest their property tax appraisal.

At 6:30 p.m. in the Holiday Inn on Broadway, the group will be meeting with a former member of an appraisal board to discuss how to approach the board about tax rates.

For homeowners, property taxes are dependent upon where a house is located and what type of property they own.

In Smith County, appraisals are expected to be handed out on April 15, and the deadline to protest that is on May 15.

Grassroots America says at their meeting tonight they will go over how residents can confidently approach the board about tax rates.

They also say they’ll let homeowners know when not to protest.

The Texas legislature is currently meeting and discussing proposals such as school zones, which will play an important role in property taxes rates this year.

But, if homeowners are anticipating a high number, Grassroots America says the class will help to be prepared and save their hard earned cash.

The cost to attend is 10$ and covers a buffet.
