A Longview woman was sentenced to nine years in prison this past week, about a month after she was found guilty of the aggravated assault of a Panola County woman in 2009.

According to our newspaper partners, Longview News Journal, Veronica Roldan (formerly Ruiz) of Longview was accused of severely beating the other woman.

At her sentencing hearing, Roldan spoke about her worries for her children and about how she wants to protect them from events that happened to her in her childhood. Roldan said she wished the assault had never happened but insisted it was in self-defense.

The victim also spoke Thursday, telling about her remaining physical pain of daily headaches, her emotional pain and worries about not being the best mother possible to her children because of the assault.
