KETK, Tyler — After a hard fought battle with a rare disease, former Newton head football coach, W.T. Johnston, died on Saturday.

Johnston lead the Eagles to back-to-back state championships in 2017 and 2018, and just last month, retired from his position, and his son, Drew, took over as athletic director.

He was diagnosed with a sever lung disease, and in 2015 had to have a transplant.

In numerous interviews over the past few seasons, Johnston talked about how he never knew if each game, or even championship, would be his last.

His fight, and determination, to be with his team for as long as he could, inspired so many people, even outside the state of Texas.
