A deadly shooting of a 16-year-old girl at a Dallas party has left another teenager in custody.
Jakiyah Wrightsil was killed early Sunday morning. Police say 19-year old William Hester, who was also at the party, admitted that he shot her.
Family and friends of 16 year-old Jakiyah Wrightsil are still processing what happened.
William Hester’s cousin, Andre Martin, said “they were having a get together and only thing I know is someone was playing with a gun.”
Dallas police say when they arrived at the Viridian Place Apartments around 4:30 AM Sunday, it appeared a large party was ending. They walked inside the apartment to find Wrightsil with a gunshot wound to the head.
Nineteen year-old William Hester later admitted to police the gun discharged while he was holding it, killing her.
Hester has been charged with manslaughter, a second-degree felony.
Martin explains “the young lady that passed away and my cousin, they was good friends. It’s sad how kids can get guns in their hands.”
Jayda Roper, lives downstairs from Wrightsil is saying “they’re teenagers. I’m pretty sure they knew nothing about the gun or how to use it.”
Martin said “It’s going to be a hard road. It’s going to be a struggle because I don’t think it’s hit them that she’s really and truly gone.”
Police say several people ran off after the shot was fired and they are still looking for more information.
