A major pile-up involving over 100 vehicles has shut down parts of an interstate in Wisconsin and left one person dead Sunday, according to Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department.
In addition to one fatality, several other people were removed from the vehicles and transported to six area hospitals.
“I’ve been in the law enforcement business and this is my 27th year and up on scene, that was the worst conditions I’ve ever seen,” Todd Christopherson Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy said.
Authorities characterized the episode as a chain-reaction crash in white-out conditions, in the first press conference. They said all southbound lanes in the area of the accident on interstate 41 will remain shut down until further notice.
The department stated that another news conference will be held tonight at 8:30 p.m. The crash is under investigation.
