Southwest Airlines completed its first-ever commercial flight to Hawaii, the company announced on Sunday.

The FAA had approved the Dallas-based airline’s certification to make the long-haul flights more than 2,400 miles out into the Pacific Ocean.
The agency requires special certification due to the long nature of the flights with very limited options for landing in an emergency.
Southwest will be under increased oversight over the next six months, which the FAA said in a statement is routine protocol.
It will fly from four cities in California: San Jose, Oakland, Sacramento, and San Diego.
