Suspicion of Bernie Tiede’s motives for cultivating a relationship with a wealthy widow 46 years his senior built in a core of Marjorie Nugent’s few friends as what appeared to be a courtship marched toward her 1996 murder at Tiede’s hand, a witness testified this morning.
According to our newspaper partner Longview News-Journal, Angela Rowe, who said she felt like a daughter to the 81-year-old Nugent, had on Wednesday described a kiss and embrace the couple had shared in Nugent’s kitchen.
“He was conning her, and I saw that,” Rowe said of the then-38-year-old Tiede. “And he knew that I knew. … I knew from the day I met him that he was going to harm her.”
Rowe named three or four couples and a woman who shared her distrust of the then-closeted gay Carthage church choir singer and mortician.
A longtime friend and business associate of Nugent’s late oilman husband, Rod Nugent Sr., had hired a retired FBI agent in Louisiana to check into Tiede’s background, Rowe and others testified today.
