An NBA player for The New Orleans Pelicans, Bryce Dejean-Jones, was shot and killed overnight Friday in an unusual incident.
Police in Texas said 23-year old Dejean-Jones was fatally shot after breaking down the door to a Dallas apartment.
According to the apartment management, the person shot had been trying to break into the apartment of an, “estranged acquaintance,” but broke into the wrong one.
Police have not confirmed that.
Dejean-Jones started playing for The Pelicans back in February.
Residents said they’re surprised.
“An NBA player breaking in somewhere? They have the resources. They don’t need to break in anywhere… that I would think. It didn’t seem like they would need to do that,” said building resident, Kristeane Benavides.
The New Orleans Pelicans issued a statement, saying in part: “we are devastated at the loss of this young man’s life who had such a promising future ahead of him.”
