Football coach dies after suffering stroke during state semifinal game

UPDATE (5:00 P.M.) – A southern Indiana high school football coach has died after complications from a stroke, according to the school.

West Washington High School said Phillip Bowsman suffered a minor stroke during a semistate game Friday evening at Indianapolis Lutheran High School. The West Washington school district said on Facebook that Bowsman died at 1:19 p.m. Monday after donating organs.

Bowsman, who has worked for the school corporation for 19 years as a health and physical education teacher, coached a variety of sports, according to the school. He has been the head football coach for 16 years and the athletic director for seven.

An Honor Walk will be Wednesday at St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital, the district said. A makeshift memorial is at the Senator Football Field. People were encouraged to stop by, leave notes, pictures, candles and other momentos. The field was to remain lighted for visitors.

Visitation will be Friday at Mount Tabor Church. A funeral service will be held on Saturday. The family asked that, in lieu of flowers or blankets, that people donate in honor of Phillip to the West Washington athletic department. The Bowsman Family Fund was set up at First Harrison Bank in Salem.

The school said the stroke was the result of a blood clot and that Bowsman underwent brain surgery Friday evening to relieve pressure due to swelling. At the time, the school said he was expected to make “a full recovery.”


CAMPBELLSBURG, Ind. (WISH) – A southern Indiana high school football coach is expected to pass away Monday following complications of a stroke, according to the school.

West Washington High School said Phillip Bowsman suffered a minor stroke during a state semi-final game Friday evening.

The school said the stroke was the result of a blood clot and that Bowsman underwent brain surgery Friday evening to relieve pressure due to swelling.

However, a Sunday post on the school’s Facebook page said that Bowsman was expected to be removed from the ventilator, allowing him to pass away peacefully.

West Washington High School canceled classed Monday and Tuesday, saying that counseling services would be available for both students and staff.
