Young girl, 4, killed in Houston robbery

Local News

The Harris County Sheriff’s investigators spent hours turning a north side motel room upside down after a young child was tragically killed during a robbery.

“The sound of her voice, just angelic, the sweetest voice you could hear,” Julie Vega, the child’s aunt recalled.

Four-year-old Ava, her 10-year-old sister Betsy and their mother Diana Gomez were all shot Monday night as they returned home. Gomez’s 5-year-old son was unharmed.

They were in the parking lot of the Mission Falls Apartments when deputies say two men demanded the mother’s purse.  When she didn’t hand it over, they were shot.

Vega had just spent the evening babysitting the children.

“Why I don’t understand. Why? Over a purse?” Vega wonders trying to understand the tragedy.

Investigators said there were three people involved.  One man was arrested at the motel room on Bammel Westfield on an outstanding warrant.  He’s considered a person of interest.  A gun similar to one used in the robbery was recovered along with other evidence to be tested. At the scene, neighbors left balloons and notes, heartbroken about the violence and the little girl lost to it.

“I want justice for Ava.  They took our Ava. She’s 4 years old, just starting life, just stolen from us….justice for Ava,” Vega said.
