What-A-Melon festival kicks off in Center

Center, Texas (KETK) - Today kicked off the annual "What-A-Melon" festival in Center.

It's a festival with rides, food and massive watermelons.

The watermelons on the "welcome to center" sign aren't just for decoration, they grow them big out there.

"These guys work all year to water them and nurture these big watermelons to this size," said Scott Stanfield, Shelby County Rotary President. "I'm 25 years old and I can tell you right now that this is the only place I've seen them."

Even the smaller watermelons entered in the "biggest watermelon contest"weigh at least 120 pounds.

"First place is $2,500, second place is $600 and third place is $500," said Stanfield. "We actually pay out all the way to 12th place and I think this year we had 22 participants."

The winning watermelon weighed a whopping 152 pounds!

The first prize went to Olivia Johnson

The festival is a long cherished one that does a lot of good in the community.

"We've been doing it for a long time, all the proceeds go to local food banks, charities, things like that," said  Stanfield.

The festival will continue in the downtown square in Center until Saturday July, 14.
