A Tyler police officer remains in the hospital following an accident Thursday evening.

Around 6:00 p.m., Officer Ryan Gummer saw a vehicle make a U-turn in front of him in the southbound lanes of 4400 block of Troup Highway, and head back north.

When the officer turned back around, the driver in front of him had stopped in the road for tree debris in the same lane.

Officer Gummer was unable to stop in time and hit the back of the vehicle.

Officer Gummer, who joined the department in 2006 and is assigned to the traffic division, was hospitalized with injuries to his shoulder and wrist.

No other injuries were reported.
