Troup boxing coach keeps family's legacy alive through memorial tournament

TROUP, Texas (KETK) - Boxing is a sport many don't associate East Texas with, but it's roots go deep for Shawn Vascocu and the Byron Payton Gym in Troup.

The gym was established in the 1950s by Shawn's grandfather Edward "Lucky" Vascocu, one of the most respected names in the sport.

After the passing of "Lucky," and Shawn's father the gym was on the brink of closing down. Shawn decided it was his turn to take up the mantel and train the next wave of boxers where his family had been doing it for decades.

"All I really started out to do was to keep going what he started," Shawn explained. "I hope they're proud of me. That's all I'm trying to do."

Three years ago he started the Lucky Vascocu Memorial Tournament.

The tournament is being held Saturday July 28, 2018 at the gym, located at 402 Lucky Street in Troup.

There will be 20 fights with the winner of each receiving a belt. Weigh in for competitors runs between 8 and 10 a.m. with doctor evaluations at 11:30 a.m.

The first fight begins at noon.

Tickets are $10 per adult and $5 per child age 6 and younger.
