Train derailment in Texas panhandle

Local News

BNSF Railway has confirmed two trains collided just east of Amarillo Tuesday morning on Highway 60.

Around 8:40 a.m. four BNSF employees were involved in the incident. According to the railway company, one employee has been taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Rescue efforts are underway for the three remaining employees on the trains.

Mandatory evacuations have been issued for parts of the city. Authorities say people can evacuate to the War Memorial or the courthouse.

Authorities say the train wreck is depleting the city of Panhandle’s water supply. The city has asked for residents to restrict water usage.

The Salvation Army is on the scene. They’re serving meals for lunch and dinner. They add that they are there for emotional support.  To donate to the Salvation Army, go to www.salvationarmytexas.org/Amarillo or call 1-800-SAL-ARMY and mention Amarillo.

Several agencies have responded including the Texas Forest Service and Pantex.
