Texas Rangers ID suspect in officer-involved shooting in Ben Wheeler

Texas Rangers have identified the suspect in the officer-involved shooting as Fernando Ruiz, 35 of Ben Wheeler.

The two victims transported to a Tyler hospital have been identified as Ismael Lugo-Cervantez, 57, of Ben Wheeler and Amanda Dawn Roberts, 33, of Ben Wheeler.

Roberts is in stable but critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing.

UPDATE #1

One man has been killed in a shooting near Ben Wheeler and the shooter has also been found dead, according to Sergeant Jean Dark with the Department of Public Safety.

The shooting occurred just after midnight Thursday morning at CR 4710, east of FM 773.

A man and a woman were transported to CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances in Tyler. The man has been declared dead.

The woman’s condition is unknown.

No identities of anyone involved have been released. 

When deputies arrived on the scene, a man began opening fire at them.

Deputies returned fire and the man retreated back into the residence.

He was later found dead, but is unclear if he died of a self-inflicted wound or from injuries in the shooting.

No officers were injured in the shootout.

The incident is still under investigation.

The person accused of shooting two people near Ben Wheeler has been found. 

According to the Van Zandt County Reporter, they were located near the residence where the shooting took place. The person was found on the ground and not moving. The condition of the alleged shooter is unknown at this time. 

According to the Van Zandt County Reporter, two people were shot on County Road 4710 in Van Zandt County. One of the victims was airlifted out of Ben Wheeler, while the other was taken to a hospital. 

The Texas Department of Public Safety was assisting in the search for the shooter with a helicopter. 

The Van Zandt County Reporter reports that help was delayed getting to the second victim who was laying in the front yard due to shots being fired at law enforcement.
