Nacogdoches, Texas (KETK) - On May 22, Governor Greg Abbott signed SB 507 with the to better protect people from surprise medical bills.
Often times when bills like this come up they are difficult to explain and many simply want to know "what does it mean for me?"
KETK News spoke with Dr. Brett Burnett at Excel ER in Nacogdoches to find out what SB 507 means for you.
"It's a great thing it provides protection for patients," said Dr. Burnett.
The bill allows mediation of balance bills for emergency care from any provider or facility which includes freestanding emergency rooms.
"It provides patients a formal mediation process with the insurance companies for anything over $500 after their deductible, coinsurance and co-pay," said Dr. Burnett.
Texans use emergency departments 22% more than the rest of the country.
The bill also had the full support of the Texas Medical Association as well as the Texas Hospital Association.
"We view this as a great thing, this is great for patients, this is great for emergency medicine as a whole and so we're in favor of it," said Dr. Burnett. "This protects patients against those in the industry that have unfair billing practices."
