SCSO: East Texas man admits to sexually assaulting 14-year-old girl

SMITH COUNTY, Texas (KETK) - A Smith County man has been arrested for sexual assault of a child.

On May 16, 2018, the Smith County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by Child Protective Services in reference to a sexual assault of a child.

Deputies learned a 14-year-old female made an outcry of sexual assault, alleging Jared Monk, 28, sexually assaulted her.

Detectives began investigating the case and interviewed Monk on Tuesday.

During the interview Monk admitted to sexually assaulting the girl and he knew she was 14 at the time of the assault.

Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Monk for sexual assault of a child. The warrant was signed by Judge Christi Kennedy with a bond set at $750,000.

Before Monk was arrested, he made threats to harm himself and family members. Due to the imminent threat of bodily injury or death to Monk and others, detectives immediately identified Monk’s location at an apartment complex in Tyler.

On Wednesday Smith County Sheriff’s Office detectives, along with Texas Rangers and the Tyler Police Department, went to the apartment complex and were able to take Monk into custody at approximately 12:15 a.m.

Monk was arrested and placed in the Smith County Jail without incident.
