Retiring owners of East Texas business give $1.2 million in bonuses to employees

MARSHALL, Texas (Longview News-Journal) - Some East Texas employees went home from work Wednesday with fuller pockets, thanks to $1.2 million in bonuses handed out by Master WoodCraft Cabinetry in Marshall retiring owners Gene and Patsy Ponder.

The bonuses for the company’s more than 500 employees in the Marshall and Jefferson locations came as a result of the company selling to ACPi on May 31. The bonuses came from the Ponders’ profits from the sale, Master WoodCraft President Mark Trexler said.

“You don’t see this happen,” Trexler said Wednesday. “The Ponders are great people, and they wanted to do this for their employees. ”

The Ponders, whose son died last year, said Wednesday that God had blessed them and they wanted to pass on that blessing to others.

“Last year, when we lost our son Kenny, it changed our lives,” an emotional Gene Ponder told his employees Wednesday. “As we’ve gotten older, we just felt like we needed to put the company in the hands of good people. You have to take care of the company for the company to take care of each one of you all in the future. I’m convinced, if you’re good to these people, they’ll be good to you.
