Heart-related deaths have been making recent headlines, including “Star Wars” actress Carrie Fisher and pop icon George Michael.
According to the American Heart Association, a heart attack occurs when the blood flow that brings oxygen to the heart muscle is severely reduced or cut off.
Dr. Dudley Goulden, from UT Health Northeast Cardiology has more than 30 years of experience working with heart health.
“Well there are some seasonal changes in heart attack but they can occur anytime throughout the year, ” Dr. Goulden.
Family history, smoking, and weight can cause heart attacks. Symptoms of a heart attack include chest pain and dizziness. Family history, smoking, and weight are factors that can lead to a heart attack.
Heart attacks can be fatal but experts say it is important to monitor your health if you survive.
“Education with the patients, teach them how they can modify their diet,” Registered Nurse Krystal Teague said.
Doctors can prescribe medication to treat patients.
“It’s absolutely essential that you get your cholesterol into a proper range, it’s essential that your blood pressure be normalized,” Dr. Goulden said.
