A Longview woman was shot in the neck, likely by a bullet fired in the air, during a local fireworks show.

According to Longview Police, the 55-year-old woman was in the 300 block of North Spur 63 to watch a fireworks display at Maude Cobb Convention Center when she began feeling pain. Someone else noticed what appeared to be a bullet wound in her neck.

The woman was taken to a local hospital where medical officials determined she in fact had been shot.

Investigators believe the woman was hit by a bullet fired into the air, based on the angle she was struck. Detectives spoke with the victim and several witnesses, but no disturbance nor shooting of a gun was seen by anyone.

Police said the shooting appears to be an act of carelessness rather than violence.

Longview Police Department stated it is illegal to discharge a firearm inside the city limits.
