Longview toddler who killed self while playing with gun identified

LONGVIEW, Texas (KETK) - A Longview toddler who killed herself while playing with a gun on Thursday has been identified.

According to the Longview News-Journal, the 3-year-old girl was identified as Geneva August.

The Longview Police Department was called to the 800 block of Owings Avenue around 6:50 p.m., on Thursday, in regards to shots being fired.

When officers arrived at the location they located August with a fatal wound. The child was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The Longview News-Journal reports a neighbor said the toddler’s grandfather had warned his son not to bring guns into the house. The grandfather did not know the gun was in his house,

"He did tell his nephew that he didn’t allow guns in his house,” neighbor Melissa Fields said. “He didn’t know the gun was in there.”

Fields also told the Longview News-Journal, the nephew and August's father, Emmanuel Slaughter Jr., stayed in the Owings Avenue home from time to time, but did not live there.

At this time no charges have been filed and the incident is still under investigation.

"A death is traumatic on anyone and even more devastating on a family when it is a child," the LPD said in a statement. "This is overwhelming and affects not only the family but first responders and the community. Prayers will be needed for everyone that was directly related to this tragic incident and also our community. Please consider your comments before they are made. Make every effort to child proof your home and make it a safe and enjoyable place for them to grow up."
