Local restaurant and bar focuses on fun, safe atmosphere during ‘Blackout Wednesday’

Local News

Wednesday night is Thanksgiving Eve and many people are home for the weekend, taking the opportunity  to visit with friends and family. While people catch up, for many, it turns into one of the biggest drinking nights of the year.

According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), Thanksgiving is the most traveled day of the year and they’ve dubbed Thanksgiving Eve ‘Blackout Wednesday.’

“More people are supposedly drinking and consuming alcohol in larger quantities,” said Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith. “Children coming home from college and wanting to get with their friends and party and things like that.”

The latest numbers from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) show more than 170 people were killed by drunk drivers during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Sheriff Smith said his officers are out in full force.

“A DWI is something that will follow you the rest of your life. It’s best to have a designated driver or just wait until you get home and stay home if you’re going to drink that much alcohol,” he said.

While it’s a busier night for most bars and restaurants, Cork Food and Drink in Tyler said they don’t call it ‘Blackout Wednesday.’

“We want them to come out and enjoy family and friends company and our company and just be thankful for what we have going on here,” said Cork General Manager Ace Estrella.

While many people come back home to Tyler, many are coming back to a growing city they’ve never seen before. Estrella said people deserve a fun, but safe atmosphere.

“It puts us in a category as a growing town and a growing community and that’s exciting for a lot of East Texas,” he said.

While Cork provides an ideal spot to celebrate the holiday, Sheriff Smith said it’s important to make an effort to watch out for each other, helping everyone stay safe this Thanksgiving.

Estrella said Cork couldn’t get enough of Halloween, so they’re celebrating again. Their ‘Halloween Revisited’ party starts at 9 p.m. on Saturday, November 26. For more information, click here.
