Homeless, pregnant women seek help

Local News
Hiway 80 Rescue Mission in Tyler works to fight homelessness.
“For pregnant women with the summer coming out, water is a huge need for hydration as well as mosquito repellent and sunscreen just to protect our ladies,” said Administrative Assistant, Tanna Barrett.
Some of those women are living out in the woods where heat and bugs are a big problem.
“These are camps where a lot of our clients and guests live,” said Barrett.  “In the area, they are out in nature and feel protected out there just kinda on their own.”
Future mothers told us they are worried about the Zika virus.
“All the mosquitos are carrying that disease,” said pregnant client, Tina Dawson.
People in need can come to the Tyler facility to cool off from the heat.
“Being pregnant, there are risks that can happen with the pregnant women and heat…heat exhaustion,” said Barrett.  “We gotta protect them and the baby.”
“I like the support from East Texas,” said Dawson.  “It’s better than being out on the streets.”
The mission said they see about 400 people in need each summer.
