An East Texas church has some big news, First Lutheran Church in Lufkin is celebrating their 75th year of service.
In 1941 Lutheran missionaries came to Lufkin. They were part of a larger group who came down for work in a paper mill.
After looking around, the missionaries found a few more Lutherans but no Lutheran church.
The missionaries sought to remedy this and not long after their arrival they founded First Lutheran Church in Lufkin.
“Over the years our congregation has had its ups and downs as every congregation does,” said Frank Starr, Interim Pastor. “We’ve had 12 pastors during this 75 years that we’ve been here and by the grace of god we’re still here.”
Starr added he is hopeful The Lord has a place for them in the community and that they can continue to serve The Lord and the community as long as they can.
The congregation plans to have a Sunday lunch together to celebrate.
