It is an exciting weekend for ham radio operators around the world.
The Tyler Amateur Radio Club is participating in the ARRL Field Day until Sunday afternoon.
A competition is held where ham radio stations try to contact as many other stations as they can in a 24 hour period.
Operators said there’s more to it than the competition. They’re also practicing for emergency situations.
“You take any major disaster, Katrina… any hurricane or such, hams are normally able to operate even when there’s been loss of cell phones and other services, provide communications to the area,” said Burch Adair, TARC Secretary Treasurer.
They simulate emergency scenarios by operating only from generators, batteries and solar power.
