Everyday patriotism: Albuquerque man replaces roof with Stars and Stripes

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (KRQE) - An Albuquerque man needed to replace his roof and he did, not with shingles, but with the stars and stripes.

"I try to be a very patriotic person. I have flags in the garage. I have flags in the house," said Rick Gabaldon.

Gabaldon's home near Central and Yucca is a permanent display of patriotism. His pitched, paneled roof depicts two American flags.

"Something we can fly every day without actually having to fly a flag," said Gabaldon.

Gabaldon's neighbors like his 'American Flag House' and fly flags of their own.

"Everybody came to really like it and enjoy it. The neighbors even fly a flag," said Gabaldon.

Gabaldon says the massive patriotic display is in honor of veterans.

"My dad was in World War II and [my wife's] dad was in Korea. So, we did this in dedication of veterans, all veterans," said Gabaldon.

Gabaldon doesn't mind if people come by and take pictures outside of his home.

"I'll be out here playing basketball with my grandson and people just stop and they'll get out of their cars and ask questions and take pictures," said Gabaldon.

Though, he does ask you respect his property and his neighbors.

If you would like to visit, Gabaldon lives on Mezcal, one block north of Central at Yucca.
