An East Texas man has been arrested following a Wednesday night chase through Smith County.

According to the Bullard Police Department, Mason Johnston, 21, of Jacksonville, was arrested Wednesday night when police say he ran during a traffic stop after allegedly trying to cash a stolen check.

According to Bullard Police Captain Jeff Bragg, there may have been a few reasons why Johnston ran. Bragg said he was arrested earlier this month and might have thought he was wanted at the time of the traffic stop. However, Johnston did not give a reason why he ran once he was arrested.

Police tell KETK Johnston was stopped near the Brookshire’s on Highway 69 in Bullard, before he headed east on Farm-to-Market Road 344. When he reached the bridge near the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 756. he got out of the car and ran. They say the car then rolled into a creek nearby.

No injuries were reported.

Johnston was booked into the Smith County Jail on $10,000 bond.
