Dove hunting season for the North Zone in Texas begins September 1 to November 13 and then the late season runs from December 17 to January 1.
For the first time in 80 years dove hunting season was extended 20 more days, making it a total of 90 days.
Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopted the season dates back in April.
The commission said, the reason for extending dove season is to allow hunters to take advantage of the Northern birds migrating south into Texas.
According to Game Warden, Eddie Hood, typically in the first part of the season, September, the birds that are hunted are local birds. The late season will give hunters an opportunity to hunt some of those northern birds.
Hood said Texas Parks and Wildlife will try this extended format for 2 or 3 years to see if they will keep the 90 day season.
