On Saturday 21 passengers and five crew members were onboard a fishing boat when it crashed into some rocks near Coronado Islands.
A call went into the Coast Guard as the 64 foot sport fishing vessel began taking on water. One crew member said after deploying life rafts in the waters off the Mexican coast the fear began to sink in.
An urgent broadcast went out and the coast guard launched its helicopter. The Coast Guard also had to contact the Mexican authorities to get permission to enter their waters.
Fortunately a 35-foot commercial fishing boat called Sweet Marie was nearby and diverted to also help the passengers of the sinking boat.
One person suffered a minor back injury, but everyone else was o.k.
The Coast Guard said it’s now launching an investigation into what caused the crash which does include drug and alcohol testing.
