Alcohol is believed to be a factor in a Henderson County crash where the driver was critically injured.

At around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Gun Barrel City Police Department officers were dispatched to a major accident in the 1300 block of W. Main Street. Emergency responders found a car had hit a tree at the scene.

According to GBCPD, investigators determined the vehicle was headed west on Main Street at a high rate of speed and veered into the eastbound lanes. The driver then overcorrected and left the north side of the road and went airborne, then struck a tree.

The driver, who is from Trinidad, was taken to an Athens ER and then flown to a Tyler hospital with serious injuries.

The investigation further revealed that alcohol was involved and possible charges are pending.

Authorities have not released the name of the driver.
