“Ab’s Chair” built in Nacogdoches

Local News
The City of Nacogdoches erected a memorial in “Ab’s Park”, but not a statue or a marker, but a chair.

The 8 foot chair was built to honor Ab Abernethy.

Mr. Abernathy wore many hats; he was an SFA professor, created an Old-time string band and he also played a crucial part in the development both of the city’s creek trails La Nana and Banita.

KETK News spoke with a professor at SFA about the meaning of the chair.

“He’d bring his fold up chair set it there and work for a little bit then come hang out on the chair, work for a little bit, and think about what was going on,” said Jeffie Brewer, SFA Professor of Sculpture. “They didn’t want to do the typical bronze statue. The chair being a memento or signifier of Ab, we built it that way.”

The chair is just off Pearl st in Nacogdoches you can also take photos in it any time you want, free of charge.
