Gustavo Zavala-Garcia has been charged with capital murder and is being held on a 10 million dollar bond. He is currently being held in the Smith County Jail. KETK looked into Zavala’s previous court records, and while we are still waiting to obtain more documents, this is what we know so far:
It was confirmed by law enforcement that Zavala is in the country illegally, and it’s not his first time. According to the source, Zavala was deported back in 2014 after assault charges.
Court records show Zavala has been arrested in the past for assault causing bodily injury to a family member. He was ordered to spend 30 days in Smith County Cail for that charge.
Family members tell us Kayla’s cousin is married to Zavala, but they say he’s always been more like an uncle.
Sunday, KETK was able to get in touch with a cousin of Kayla Gomez.
He says because Zavala was married into the family, he wasn’t as close to him. He said he had only seen him a couple of times at major family functions.
He mentioned their family had taken Zavala in to help him get back on his feet. He says this is how their family was repaid.
Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith says Zavala is the only suspect in the murder of Kayla Gomez. Since he’s charged with capital murder, he will be eligible for the death penalty.
