Community remembers legacy of former ETX pastor

Former East Texas pastor Paul Powell died Wednesday night, according to Green Acres Baptist Church officials. Powell served as the church pastor from 1972 until 1989.

Powell previously served as the Dean of Baylor University’s  George W. Truett Theological Seminary.  Powell officially retired from that position in May of 2007. According to Baylor University, during Powell’s tenure there, the Seminary’s enrollment more than doubled, and their endowment increased to more than $38 million.

He was also the retired president and CEO of both the Robert M. Rogers Foundation of Tyler, Texas, and the Annuity Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.

No cause of death released at this time.

Visitation for Powell is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway, in Tyler.
