Longview man gets 40 years in prison for sex crimes against children

An East Texas man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for multiple sexual crimes against children in more than one county.

The Upshur County District Attorney’s Office said Danny Ray Copeland, of Longview, pleaded guilty on Friday to aggravated sexual assault of a child and two counts of indecency with a child. He received a 40-year sentence and two 10-year sentences, respectively, however, they will be served concurrently.

Copeland is also under indictment in Gregg County, and as part of the Upshur County plea agreement, he will plead guilty to sexual performance of a child and receive a 20-year prison sentence to run concurrently with his Upshur County sentences.

Copeland will not become eligible for parole until he completes half of his prison sentence.  Upon release, he will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

The case was prosecuted by First Assistant Natalie A. Miller.  Judge Lauren Parish presided over the hearing in the 115th Judicial District Court in Upshur County.
