TYLER, Texas (KETK) - On a night when the crosstown rivals celebrated Coaches vs. Cancer night at Tyler Junior College's Wagstaff Gymnasium, The Robert E. Lee boys put on possibly their best performance of the season to win their first district game 80-60 over JT, while the Lady Raiders put a bow on what's been a very solid regular campaign with a 55-24 victory against the Lady Lions.
In the boys game, Tyler Lee jumped out to a 24-9 lead after one quarter, and the Lions would never be able to dig themselves out of the hole. Junior guard Devin Johnson led the Red Raiders with 18 points as Lee snapped a 12-game losing streak.
Coach Alan Simmons' bunch is now 10-22 overall, and 1-11 in district 11-6A action. John Tyler, on the other hand, fell to 11-18 on the season, and 2-10 in league play. The Lions won the first meeting back in January.
In the ladies contest, the Lady Raiders dominated JT as they led 30-13 at the half. Texas State signee Ja'Kayla Bowie had 19 points to lead the way for Lee which improved to 27-6 overall and 11-3 in district play.
Coach Ross Barber's team takes the No. 3 seed out of its district. They will play either Lufkin, or Conroe Oak Ridge in the first round of the class 6A playoffs next week.
As part of the Coaches vs. Cancer event, the American Cancer Society sold pink T-shirts to raise funds and awareness. Also, the team's head coaches wore sneakers on their respective benches instead of dress shoes.
