Kilgore wins its first ever state soccer championship

Whether or not they needed extra motivation, the Kilgore Bulldogs completed a journey Friday that was three years in the making.  The dogs lost senior captain David Garcia to a broken leg Wednesday in the semis.  So with him watching on crutches, Kilgore defeated Bridgeport 4-2 in a penalty kick shoot-out after the two teams finished regulation and then two overtimes tied at two in the Boys 4A State Final.  Kilgore wins its first state soccer championship in program history.  The Bulldogs also kept their promise to their late Lady Bulldog teammate Samantha Watkins, who passed away in December after a seizure.

Kilgore finishes a championship season 21-5-2.  The Bulldogs win the title after back-to-back state semifinal defeats in 2015, and 2016, and in the school's fourth overall appearance in the State tournament.  They reached the final back in 2011.

Kilgore also makes it three straight years that an East Texas team has won a state crown following Lufkin, and Palestine, the last two years respectively.
