Clayton George resigns as head football coach at Robert E. Lee

Tyler, Texas (KETK) - On Thursday, Tyler Independent School District announced Robert E. Lee head football coach Clayton George has resigned from his position to spend more time with his family.

George's resignation comes just one day after the REL Spring Game and a little more than a year after taking the reins.

George was officially name REL's head coach on December 14, 2015, after having previously served as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Southlake Carrol. George helped lead the Dragons to two state championships.

Before his stint at Southlake, he coached under Todd Dodge at the University of North Texas.

George also has East Texas roots, having graduated from Athens High School in 1989.

The district announced they would assign responsibilities to the current staff and begin searching for a new head coach immediately.

REL is set to kick off their 2017 season on September 1 at Marshall.
