Hurricane Irma Weakens Over Florida

We are now at the peak of hurricane season

Tyler (KETK) - As of 8pm Sunday evening, Hurricane Irma has weakened into a Category 2 storm with sustained winds of 105 mph. It's expected to continue to weaken as it continues to move over land.

All of south Florida has been impacted by the Irma. High winds, heavy rain, isolated tornadoes, high storm surge and flooding have all occurred. Numerous power outages have been reported.

One thing to note is that today, September 10th, is the peak of hurricane season. Looking at climatology, after today we start slowly decreasing the activity in the Atlantic Basin. There is another peak around the middle to late part of October. We still have Hurricane Jose in the Atlantic that we are keeping an eye on. Also another area in the Eastern Atlantic that shows signs of developing. National Hurricane Center has a 50% chance of development over the next 5 days. We'll be watching and updating you on all tropical activity.
