East Texas Special Olympics chapter looking for volunteers

KILGORE, Texas (KETK) -- Twelve years ago, mark DePaepe, would have never dreamed of being any kind of coach.

"I didn't even play sports as a child, I didn't like sports as a child."

But on this Tuesday afternoon in Kilgore, he worked along side a couple of East Texas athletes, in long distance cycling.

"I have a whole group of new friends, and you know, the people that come and participate, all of our athletes you know, they are always so happy to see you, and i'm always so happy to see them," said DePaepe

He is part of the Special Olympics, Tyler Rose Delegation, and works along athletes like Mike Steed, who, back in 2014 competed in nationals up in New Jersey.

"Every week, every week, I like to see my coach. every week," said Steed.

The Tyler chapter currently has around a dozen coaches working with more than 150 athletes. It's an organization made up fully of volunteers.

"We could do so much more if we had more people to come and help as coaches, or just volunteers," said DePaepe.

So whether it's on a basketball court, on a bicycle, or any sport in between, these East Texas athletes have the talent, and say they'd love to have even more, come along for the ride.
