BACK TO SCHOOL: School supplies lists growing, costs increasing

School supplies lists growing

EAST TEXAS (KETK) - East Texas schools are making the list, parents checking it twice for back to school supplies shopping.

"It was about five to six trips back and forth, you know you cant find this, or this isn't on sale, and it's ridiculous," a Whitehouse ISD parent said. "It gets so expensive."

"Even for junior high, they have a school supplies list," another parent said.

From binders to notebook paper, and crayons to glue sticks, there are plenty of items filling up the buggy, and for some, emptying the wallets.

"We're having trouble finding eight large glue sticks. Those are about 4 to 10 dollars."

"Everything was 109 dollars. Just since I want to get it all done with, and just go to one store and have it done, I just bought it."

While some parents question certain items listed, school districts say every item on the list is necessary.

"This year she had to get pencils that were already sharpened. And yeah, we're just like what? What's wrong with a regular pencil."

They're aware parents aren't the only ones dishing out the dollars.

"I typically spend about a hundred dollars each summer. Sometimes you just have to know you have to provide maybe a few items to some of the kids, and that's okay," an East Texas teacher said.

"It's a difficult thing to budget for," Bullard Superintendent Todd Schneider said. "It's hard to put your finger on. But that's part of the business, just like raising kids at the house, there's unforeseen costs show up all the time."

Mr. Schneider also says that more items are being seen on the lists because the standards of education are higher.
