Power outages across east Texas

Sporadic power outages knocked lights out across east Texas Wednesday.

Southwestern Electric Power Company reported there were 14,000 without power and Upshur Rural Electric reported 10,900 members without service. The companies both said it is hard to know when everything will be up and running again but Upshur Rural Electric said they brought in nine extra contractor crews to assist throughout the evening.

Tidwell Tires on Highway 80 was one business that lost power. Nathaniel Higar had to work Wednesday morning but was sent home after the store lost power. He took the day to spend time with family and friends. “We've been without power for about two hours so they decided to let us go ahead and go on home. I mean it started off sleeting this morning and the next thing you know it’s like the white cloud so I mean, it’s awesome.”

But for some, neither snow nor rain will keep them from doing their job.

Fortunately for U.S. postal worker, Bradley Gennings, the snow is much easier for him to drive in than the freezing rain from Monday. “I'm used to it. I’ve done it several times already and the roads aren't really that bad the snow is fluffy; it’s not making ice, so it was a lot worse on Monday.”

Businesses that did have power had to decide whether to close early, or even open at all.

Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers was one business that opened Wednesday. General Manager, Dayne Kelly, said they would consider closing early. “A lot of folks of east Texas will see this weather and they’re not real comfortable driving in it. So we will be open for those who get out but I don't think we will get a lot of business today.”

For those who are less experienced driving in the snow, Higar had some advice. “In this type of weather you want to keep a quarter to a half a tank of gas in your car, if not your lines will freeze. Make sure you got good tires. Do not under any circumstance pour water on your windshield.
